KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is forging ahead in the renewable energy sector with the launch of the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), a transformative framework that will guide the state's transition towards a low-carbon, secure, and inclusive energy future.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the policy holds transformative potential with projections indicating that by 2050, it could contribute RM550 billion to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He described the SET-P as a comprehensive and integrated policy document aimed at transforming Sarawak's energy sector.
"It consolidates all existing strategies under a unified framework while addressing the energy trilemma which ensures energy security, promoting environmental sustainability, and maintaining economic affordability.
“The transformative potential of SET-P is such that, by 2050, it is projected to contribute RM550 billion in cumulative GDP, create over 80,000 new jobs, and attract investments worth between RM580 billion and RM700 billion,” he said.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari said this at the Public Industry Engagement Day and Launching Ceremony of the SET-P held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Monday.
He noted that the SET-P complements two other policies previously launched, namely the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, both of which drive the transition towards renewable energy.
Additionally, more than 75 per cent of the revenue generated is expected to benefit the low and middle-income groups, ensuring that Sarawak’s energy transition is equitable and inclusive.
The SET-P is built on seven strategic pillars comprising renewable energy, natural gas, energy efficiency, low carbon mobility, clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), and alternative energy, all of which are supported by five key enablers namely robust governance and regulation, innovative financing and investment, strong infrastructure, technology and innovation, as well as a skilled, adaptable workforce.
Also present were Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Ministers, Department Heads, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
